Orbán: if a country has no borders, or is unable to protect them, it is not a country
According to the Hungarian prime minister, if a country has no borders or is unable to protect them, it is not a country.
At the conference for heads of mission beginning on Monday, Viktor Orbán stated that the EU had made the right decision when it decided to make internal borders “unsubstantial”. However, Hungary has its external borders, too, the protection of which the country had undertaken – this was one of the legal bounds when joining the Schengen zone, he recalled. The head of the government emphasized that certain regulations based on common agreement cannot be kept in force while saying that they cannot be enforced in reality, because this would lead to the routing of the trust that is the basis of the EU.
Hungary insists on keeping to EU regulations, however, the problem is that it is unable to act accordingly at the moment, that is why we have decided to build the fence, said Viktor Orbán. There is no guarantee, he added, that this is enough, but everything humanly possible has to be done to protect external borders.
