Pázmány Catholic University asks students to support the refugees
Szabolcs Szuromi, Rector of Péter Pázmány Catholic University (in Budapest) has asked deans and student bodies of the institution’s faculties in a circular letter to do everything in their power to organise and support volunteer work helping refugees.
According to the letter, which is dated Monday and was also sent to MTI (Hungarian Wire Service), it was the Hungarian Charity Service of the Order of Malta who asked for the university’s help in tending to the refugees from the Middle East. Help includes “potential pro bono interpreting tasks, as well as other voluntary work that may provide humane conditions for refugees coming to Hungary”.
Szabolcs Szuromi added that he is well aware of the fact that several professors and students of the university have already been taking part in this volunteer work.
He wrote that Pázmány University not only teaches, but also educates, and it is its moral duty to realise the Christian value of philanthropy through actions. The Rector, therefore, as he put it in the letter, “fully accepting the request of the Charity Service of the Order of Malta” (Maltese Crescent), asked the deans and student bodies of the faculties of the university to do everything in their power to organise and support in any form the volunteer work helping refugees.
